On windows you could try to identify the default mail prog via the registry. 
Apparently the path to the default mail prog lives at

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

At least thats the place where i found it on 3 or 4 different pcs. Please let 
me know if this works for you.
